Mission Trip: Lakota Nation

June 8–12, 2026 · The Road West

Some trips you take with your feet. This one, we took with our hearts. For five days in June, a small band of travelers pointed the van west and drove until the sky got bigger and the towns got smaller. We came to the Lakota Reservation not to fix anything, but to be present. To listen. To love. And somewhere out on those wide-open plains, God did what He always does with willing hearts. He showed up.

Connections & Reconnections

Funny thing about a long road: it has a way of bringing folks together. Old friends became family again. Strangers became friends. Around shared meals and shared silences, walls came down and hearts opened up. We didn't cross the country to make an impression. We came to make a connection. And the beautiful truth we keep relearning is this: the people you meet are never an interruption to the mission. They are the mission.

Lessons from the Saddle

Lessons from the Saddle

There is a trust that happens between a person and a horse that words cannot teach. You have to feel it. Out on the trail, beneath the cottonwoods, we learned to hold the reins loosely and lead gently. A horse knows when you are afraid and knows when you are at peace. Maybe that is why God gave them to us for a few days out here. They reminded us that faith is not about being in control. It is about walking forward, one steady step at a time, trusting the One who holds the reins.

Planting Seeds

Lessons from the Saddle

A farmer does not stand over the soil demanding the harvest come today. He plants. He waters. He waits. And he trusts. That is the quiet work of a mission trip. We may never see the full bloom of what was planted this week, a kind word here, a shared prayer there, a seed of hope dropped into good ground. But we do not plant for the applause of the harvest. We plant because the Sower asked us to. And He has never once wasted a seed.

Hold On to Each Other

Out on the boardwalk, with the badlands rising behind us, we learned again the oldest lesson of the trail. When the footing gets uncertain, you reach for a hand. We laughed, we leaned, we caught one another before the stumble. This is what the family of God looks like out in the wild places, a circle of hands that will not let you fall. And when the ground gives way, as it sometimes will, grace is the friend still holding on.

Standing Small, Looking Up

Standing Small, Looking Up

Stand beneath the bones of a mammoth and something happens to your pride. You feel small. And small, it turns out, is a good place to stand. It is where wonder lives. All week the land kept doing this to us, the endless sky, the ancient hills, the giants of another age. Each one whispering the same quiet sermon: the God who made all of this, every bone and every blade of grass, knows your name. How can you not be amazed?

Blessed & Heading Home

Blessed & Heading Home

By the last day, our shoes were dustier, our hearts were fuller, and our smiles came easier. Somewhere between the horses and the hills, the connections and the reconnections, we stopped counting what we gave and started counting what we received. That is how it always goes on a trip like this. You set out to be a blessing, and you come home the one who has been blessed. Until next June, Lakota Nation. We are already counting the days.
